#Happiness #Challenge

Happy people are healthier people - so I strongly encourage you to find something fun to do, not just today, but on an on-going basis.

"A review of more than 160 studies of human and animal subjects has found "clear and compelling evidence" that -- all else being equal -- happy people tend to live longer and experience better health than their unhappy peers" ("Happiness improves health and lengthens life, review finds", Science Daily).  Studies found that a positive outlook and general mental health allows one to cope with stress better, and can lower the risk of coronary incident.

Did you know, noticing your happiness will also increase your happiness?  There was a craze going around recently - #100happydays that was a challenge to be happy for 100 days in a row.  If you have not taken the challenge, I encourage you to try, it is a great experience.

In fact, I am challenging you, for the rest of the month of April to find something to be happy about or something to be grateful for every day.  I encourage you to share those things with your friends and family, either verbally, or through social media.  If you're up for a bigger challenge, for for a full 100 days.

#Yoga in the #Park

Recently my friend Ashley introduced me to a wonderful new idea - Yoga in the Park!  Here in Sacramento, a yoga class taught by an expert yoga instructor from a local studio is offered for free in McKinley Park (near the Rose Garden) at 9:00 am.  In the cold months, they migrate to a near-by building.

I checked it out, and something similar is offered in many cities across America (so if you don't live in Sacramento, hit the internet and search for your city's version).

Yoga is a great way to stay active and flexible in a life long way.  It is all levels (and so is the class on Saturdays in Sacramento) - which means that you should take the class at your current skill level.  People who currently have low levels of physical activity and or flexibility should start at a beginner class.  In an all-levels class, this means that when the instructor offers modifications for beginners, you should do them - otherwise you risk strain or injury.

#Family #Dinner Night

When I was young, my family had dinner together every night unless someone was out of town.  Once in a while, dinner was late because of a soccer game, or babysitting, or a meeting, but even on those nights, we came together at the kitchen table and had a family meal.

The experts tell us that the multitude of programs we enroll our children in, and the extreme business of American life today may not be good for us.  They also say that stability is.  I find that although I didn't appreciate them for the gift they were at the time, I am enormously thankful for the gift of time that my parents gave my sister and I each night.

I find that although I am adult and single now, I have created my own version of family dinner night.  A couple of friends come over on the same night each week.  I begin cooking as they arrive, and we share all the important details of our lives, just as my family did around the dinner table.  Often, they will help me cook, which my sister and I used to do when we were growing up (and is how we learned to cook).

I think a lot of family values are shared in the family dinner night.  My sister and I learned that family is important; that it should be prioritized over the other things in our lives.  We learned about healthy eating and about cooking.  We learned about politics and religion though family discussion, but also about forming our own thoughts and opinions, because our parents believed that we should have them.

#Office #Workouts

A friend asked for a way to "fit in" more fitness/work out time.

Today I'm going to give us a couple of videos that together will give you a good workout which you can do without ever leaving your office.  If you choose to do only part of the workout, that is totally okay, choose your target area(s).

5 Minute Arms:
This 5 minute video requires no equipment.  It is designed to help you work your shoulders and arms. I love this video, because it totally kicks my butt whenever I do it (which is NOT every day, unfortunately).

5-Minute Office Friendly Workout:

5-Minute Office Friendly Workout- This video offers some great all-over exercises you can do at the office.  If you want to adopt it as your regular routine, you will want to invest in an exercise band.
